In the silence there is only God; God in the fabric of attention, in the pattern of breathing, in the texture of the air and the body's weight.
But if we are attentive we'll see that we keeping turning away: to thoughts, to desires, to anxieties, routines - almost anything rather than staying still in the silence. We continually prefer things to their source.
But if we keep watch in the stillness, holding the silence in our own quiet, then we'll find there a presence that is waiting, always.
"Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you. For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him." (Isaiah 30:18 NRSV)
